2017 Football Preview: Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy
Posted August 21, 2017
Last season’s record: 6-4
League: Charter School Conference
Returning starters: 11
First game: 4 p.m. Aug. 24 at Detroit Mumford
Last season, Chandler Park Academy put up 26.6 points per game on its way to an eighth straight playoff berth. Coach John Jergovich said the team must execute its offense and control the line of scrimmage if that run is to continue. Jergovich noted that staying healthy is also key.
Senior wide receiver Anthony Hudson, junior wide receiver/running back Emari O’Brien, junior quarterback Marquez Steele and senior running back Keondrae Booker will lead the offense.
Chandler Park was stout on defense last season, allowing only 14.1 points per game. The defense held six opponents to 15 points or less and recorded two shutout wins. In order for that success to carry over, Jergovich said health would be vital.
“And we have to be aggressive and show great tackling skills,” he said.
“This season is like any other,” Jergovich said. “We want to win our conference and make the playoffs.”
at Detroit Mumford (8-3) — 4 p.m. Aug. 24
The Eagles begin 2017 against the team that ended their 2016 season. The Mustangs knocked off Chandler Park 26-20 in a Division 4 predistrict. That was the teams’ first-ever meeting. Mumford last season recorded three shutout wins on its way to the state playoffs.
vs. Opponent to be named — 7 p.m. Aug. 31
Chandler Park’s opponent will be announced at a later date.
at Farmington High (2-7) — 7 p.m. Sept. 8
This is the first matchup between Chandler Park and the Oakland County squad. The Falcons last season were shut out three times and allowed at least 40 points in six of their nine games. The Eagles topped 40 points twice in 2016.
vs. Detroit Edison PSA (4-4) — 7 p.m. Sept. 15
Week 4 marks the first time Chandler Park and Edison will face off. Edison, which established its varsity program in 2012, has finished .500 or better in each of the last two seasons.
at Detroit Old Redford Academy (2-7) — 7 Sept. 22
A Week 5 win would move Chandler Park to 8-0 all-time against Old Redford. The Eagles knocked off the Ravens 56-6 last season. The Ravens were held to six points or less five times in 2016.
vs. Romulus Summit Academy (0-9) — 7 p.m. Sept. 29
Summit Academy in nine games last season managed just 40 points and was shut out five times. The Eagles knocked off the Dragons 54-0 in 2016 to move to 8-0 in the series.
at Southfield Bradford Academy (8-3) — 2 p.m. Oct. 7
Chandler Park bested the Bulldogs 26-12 last season to take a 7-0 series lead. Bradford, entering its ninth season with a varsity program, qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in 2016. On their way to the postseason, the Bulldogs earned five shutout wins.
vs. Warren Michigan Collegiate (9-2) — 7 p.m. Oct. 13
Michigan Collegiate in 2016 put up at least 42 points six times. The Cougars only needed 34 in a 12-point, Week 8 win over the Eagles. Michigan Collegiate’s 2016 win halted a five-game Chandler Park winning streak. The Eagles are 6-3 all-time against the Cougars.
at Adrian High (7-5) — 7 p.m. Oct. 20
The regular-season finale represents the first matchup between the Eagles and Maples. Adrian last season advanced to the state playoffs for the first time since 2011. Chandler Park has made the postseason for eight straight years.
